With deep appreciation to the original “If you give a mouse a cookie”
If you want to check it out for your kids (or grandkids)
If you give a gardener a plant,
They’ll probably want a pot to put it in.
When you give them the pot,
They’ll ask for some soil to fill it.
When they have the soil,
They’ll need a trowel to scoop it in.
After they’ve filled the pot with soil,
They’ll realize they need another plant to keep the first one company.
Once they’ve planted both,
They’ll ask for a watering can to give them a drink.
As they water the plants,
They’ll notice the sun is shining just right,
So they’ll decide to plant a few more.
With more plants,
They’ll need some fertilizer to help them grow.
And as they sprinkle the fertilizer,
They’ll think the garden could use a little color,
So they’ll ask for some flowers to brighten things up.
When the flowers are in,
They’ll notice the garden could use a border,
So they’ll ask for some stones to line the edge.
Once the stones are in place,
They’ll realize they need a bench to sit and enjoy the view.
And when they’re sitting on the bench,
They’ll notice that the plants could use some pruning,
So they’ll ask for a pair of garden shears.
After they’ve pruned the plants,
They’ll think about all the new plants they could grow.
So they’ll start planning,
And that will remind them of the plant you gave them.
And chances are,
If you give a gardener a plant,
They’ll want another one to go with it.
