I have just returned from the SNA 2014 trade show in Atlanta, GA. Working with Karen and Danny Summers we created an app for the Southern Nursery Association as well as conduction a demonstration of Apple’s new iBeacon technology. Attendees and exhibitors were encouraged to download the app (which works on both Apple and Android smart devices) prior to the show.
The demonstration was for Apple iPhones running iOS 7.1 or higher. Those devices could then interact with the beacons which were placed at the booths of 10 sponsors. We placed two beacons at each booth, one for ‘check ins’ and the other to demonstrate actions triggered on the app by holding the iPhone within a specific proximity to the beacon. Attendees were rewarded for downloading the app (free beverage), checking in five times (free lunch) and for those checking in at 10 exhibitors they had a shot at winning an iPad.
Our goal at the event was to expose the industry to an emerging technology. The response, naturally enough, ranged from abject disinterest to a genuine enthusiasm. It was interesting to see the reaction of the attendees (and some exhibitors as well) change over the course of the two day show. I was approached by several looking for ways of incorporating this technology into their business and assocations.
